London, 2nd April 2019 – The latest version of Open Broadcast Systems’ encoder and decoder software, which will be launched at NAB, sees latency reduced to one of the lowest in the industry.
With an end-to-end latency of just sixty milliseconds (at 1080p60), it is the lowest currently achieved for an encoder / decoder pair using Commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) IT hardware. It is also one of the lowest latencies achievable in the industry across any full-frame contribution encoder. It is able to achieve this with no reduction in picture quality.
The new software will be rolled out across the encoder and decoder solutions with existing customers automatically receiving an upgrade over the coming months.
Kieran Kunhya, Managing Director, Open Broadcast Systems, commented: “Latency is by far the biggest remaining barrier for the switch to COTS hardware and software. This development means it is no longer a concern, enabling our customers to deliver high quality live video with comparable latency to traditional hardware products.”
The low latency achieved also means those live video feeds where timing is critical, such as esports and remote production, can now benefit from the efficiencies of using standard IT hardware.
Open Broadcast Systems’ entire range of IP encoders and decoders also support the recently established RIST (Reliable Internet Stream Transport) protocol for interoperable low latency contribution quality video via unmanaged networks.
Open Broadcast Systems will be demonstrating its range of encoders and decoders on its booth (SL5624) at NAB from 8th – 11th April 2019. For more information or to book a meeting, please visit the company’s NAB events page.
